What You Need
Camera—a zoom-enabled device with a camera such as a computer, ipad, phone, or camera. Situate it approximately 45 degrees off your shoulder so I can see both you and your painting. Please do not place your camera directly behind you! I recommend a stool or shelf to elevate the camera to a suitable level.
Paint—Use whatever you may already have (watercolors, acrylics, etc) but Tempera brings out the kid in us and will (usually) wash out if spilled. Order Tempera paints from dickblick.com or go to your local art store.
Brushes—Just one brush can get you started, and then you’ll want an array of shapes and sizes!
Paper—the bigger the better, tho any size will work. I use 80 lb Bristol Cover vellum, 20x26. You can find various pads such as Strathmore at Blick, Walmart, and art stores. Some folks use the rolls of paper from Walmart.
Easel Area—a sturdy easel is good, or you can lean an old door against a wall, or tape cardboard or brown paper to your wall. Definitely protect your wall (or cupboard or fridge) so you can paint more freely. You can even tape paper to your shower wall, then rinse it off when done! If you choose to paint at a table, please have a way to lean/prop your painting so I can see both it and you as you paint.
Water—a few cups of water to swash your brushes before dipping into a new color (tip: refrain from soaking your brushes on the tip, or using hot water to clean them).
Rags—for dabbing and spills. I like the resilient heavy duty blue paper towels from the car care area.
Lighting—Good lighting from both sides will improve your experience by eliminating shadows. You can use inexpensive clip-on lights from the hardware store or order something online.
Surface—A side table or stool is an easy way to have what you need beside you. I use little sauce to-go cups, old lids, and palettes to keep my paints separated and also to mix colors. It's fun to make-do with what you have on hand.
Masking tape—for taping your paper to wall and to add paper if your painting needs to grow bigger. I prefer the green tape #2060.
I’d be glad to have a look at your set-up via zoom and we can tweak it as necessary. Questions are welcome: thepaintingportal@gmail.com
